USPTO Dashboard Shows Full Speed Ahead

The United States Patent and Trademark Office published a patent dashboard webpage(http://www.uspto.gov/dashboards/patents/main.dashxml) to illustrate the current and past pendency, backlog, and other patent statistics.  The data is displayed in graphs.

As of February, 2011, the news is good for patent applicants.  The time until the first action is dropping, as is the total time of pendency.  Most importantly, the average number of office actions per case is decreasing.

The point is that it is a great time to apply for a patent application.  Quicker first actions mean quicker allowances.  Fewer office actions mean lower legal fees.

I attribute these improvements to the efforts of Director David Kappos.  I notice a more cooperative attitude in the examiners that I contribute to the director.

Welcome to the Pearson on Patents Blog

As an inventor, business owner, or general counsel, you probably are proud of your invention and branding but may not know how to file a patent application or register a trademark. You may not be sure of the costs and procedures. You may not know how to choose an effective attorney. You may not know how to compare legal fee pricing methods. You simply just may not know how to start protecting your business' most valuable assets.

This blog will provide tools to inventors to evaluate the value of the inventions and branding. The blog will update you on patent laws (statutes), rules, case law, and Patent and Trademark Office procedure in a way targeted at business or general counsel, not legal-speak for IP specialists.

I look forward to sharing all of my knowledge with you. Hopefully, you will learn as much about intellectual-property law as I think you will teach me what you need from a patent practitioner.
